Plant bare roots of new trees and shrubs while the weather is still decent. You can scent your winter garden using fragrant bushes. You should remember that garden birds can be active all year round, so make certain that your bird tables and bird feeders don't get covered in snow or ice. You can make new hellebore flowers by removing old leaves. You can make the January blues go away by cutting the stems.

Planting shrubs or trees without roots in January is easier than other months. It's also possible to prune gooseberry and currant trees while it's still warm enough. Don't forget about cleaning out your greenhouse. This will make it easier to prepare your garden for the spring season. Remember to plan for the year ahead!

Start planting seeds in January. Some seeds may be planted outdoors in cold frames. Others should not be planted outdoors, but they can be covered with row covers or placed in a cold frame. During January, you can even start planting the seeds of your favorite fruit trees. It's best to wait for the ground to warm up before you plant them outdoors. If you are unsure when to plant a particular type of flower, wait for the ground to reach the right temperature before you plant it.

How To

Organic fertilizers for your garden

Organic fertilizers are made from natural substances such as manure, compost, fish emulsion, seaweed extract, guano, and blood meal. The term "organic" refers to using non-synthetic materials in their production. Synthetic fertilizers include chemicals used in industrial processes. They are widely used in agriculture because they provide nutrients to plants quickly and efficiently without requiring laborious preparation methods. However, synthetic fertilizers pose risks to human health and the environment. In addition, they require large amounts of energy and water to produce. Runoff from synthetic fertilizers can also pollute groundwater and surface water. This pollution is both harmful to wildlife as well as humans.

There are many organic fertilizers available:

* Manure - produced when livestock eat food containing nitrogen (a plant nutrient). It contains bacteria and enzymes that break down the waste into simple compounds that plants can absorb easily.

* Compost: A mixture of animal manure, grass clippings (decomposing leaves), vegetable scraps (vegetable scraps) and grass clippings (grass clippings). It is rich with nitrogen, phosphorus. potassium, calcium. magnesium. sulfur. iron. copper. manganese. molybdenum. chlorine. and carbon. It's porous so it is able to retain moisture well, and slowly releases nutrients.

* Fish Emulsion: A liquid product derived primarily from fish oil. It is similar to soap in its ability to dissolve oils and fats. It contains phosphorous, nitrogen, and trace elements.

* Seaweed Extract - a concentrated solution of minerals extracted from kelp, red algae, brown algae, and green algae. It is a good source of vitamins A, C, iron, and iodine.

* Guano is the excrement of seabirds and bats. It contains nitrogen, phosphorous, potassium, sodium, magnesium, sulfate, chloride, and carbon.

* Blood Meal, the remains from slaughtered animals. It is rich with protein, making it useful for feeding poultry or other animals. It also contains trace minerals like phosphorus, potassium and nitrogen.

Mix equal amounts of compost, manure, and/or fish oil to make organic fertilizer. Mix thoroughly. If you don’t have access, you can mix one ingredient with the other. For example, you could mix 1 part of the fishemulsion with 2 parts of compost if only you have access to fish emulsion.

To apply the fertilizer, spread it evenly over the soil using a shovel or tiller. One quarter cup of the fertilizer should be spread per square foot. You'll need to add fertilizer every two weeks until new growth appears.
