It is important to prepare your soil for planting in spring so you get the best results from your garden. Before you can start to plant seeds, you will need to first work the soil and remove any frozen areas. Many vegetables can be planted straight into the ground. However, most fruits and flowers will require some work. You can direct-sow vegetables and herbs depending on where you live. It's important not to over-water the soil or compact it.

Spring is a great time for plants to plant in cooler climates. Before planting your first tomato or pepper seedling, make sure the soil is warm enough for your plant's roots. Dig a few inches deep and use a spade shovel to dig up the soil. Avoid using a blunt point shovel. This can cause bruised plants.

The best time to prune fruit trees and shrubs is early spring, before their bud-bearing buds have opened. Do not wait until spring to prune flowering shrubs and trees. This will stress them and prevent them blooming. Planting fruits trees and shade trees as well as vegetables in the spring is a great way to save money. It's also an ideal time to plant summer flowering plants. Don't forget about weed control - the sooner you weed out the garden, the more time you'll have to prepare for the spring planting season.

How To

Use organic fertilizers in your garden

Organic fertilizers are made from natural substances such as manure, compost, fish emulsion, seaweed extract, guano, and blood meal. Non-synthetic materials are used in the production of organic fertilizers. Synthetic fertilizers can be used in industrial processes. Synthetic fertilizers are used widely in agriculture as they supply nutrients quickly and efficiently to plants without the need for laborious preparation. Synthetic fertilizers are dangerous for the environment as well as human health. They also require large amounts energy and water to make. Runoff from synthetic fertilizers can also pollute groundwater and surface water. This pollution is both harmful to wildlife as well as humans.

There are many types of organic fertilizers.

* Manure is a product of livestock eating nitrogen-rich food (a plant nutrient). It has bacteria and enzymes that help to break down the waste, resulting in simple compounds that are easy for plants to absorb.

* Compost: A mixture of animal manure, grass clippings (decomposing leaves), vegetable scraps (vegetable scraps) and grass clippings (grass clippings). It is rich with nitrogen, phosphorus. potassium, calcium. magnesium. sulfur. iron. copper. manganese. molybdenum. chlorine. and carbon. It's porous so it is able to retain moisture well, and slowly releases nutrients.

* Fish Emulsion- A liquid product that is made from fish oil. It is similar to soap in its ability to dissolve oils and fats. It contains trace elements and phosphorous as well as nitrogen and nitrogen.

* Seaweed Extract – A concentrated solution containing minerals extracted from kelp. It provides a source of vitamins A and C, iodine, and iron.

* Guano is the excrement of seabirds and bats. It contains nitrogen and phosphorous, potassium as well sulfate, salt, chloride, carbon, sodium, magnesium and other minerals.

* Blood Meal: The remains of animal carcasses. It contains protein, which makes it useful for feeding poultry and other animals. It also has trace minerals such as phosphorous, potassium, nitrogen and other nutrients.

Mix equal amounts of compost, manure, and/or fish oil to make organic fertilizer. Mix well. If you don’t own all three ingredients, one can be substituted for the other. If you have only access to the fish oil emulsion, then you can combine 1 part fish emulsion and 2 parts compost.

Use a shovel to evenly distribute the fertilizer over the soil. You should spread about one quarter cup of the fertilizer per square foot. To see new growth, you will need to apply more fertilizer every 2 weeks.
