How To

Organic fertilizers for your garden

Organic fertilizers are made with natural substances like compost, manure, seaweed extract and blood meal. Non-synthetic materials are used in the production of organic fertilizers. Synthetic fertilizers contain chemicals used in industrial processes. These fertilizers are commonly used in agriculture, as they can provide nutrients to plants quickly without the need for complicated preparation. Synthetic fertilizers can pose risks to the environment and human health. These fertilizers also require high amounts of energy, water and time to make. Many synthetic fertilizers are also harmful to groundwater and water surface because of runoff. This pollution is detrimental to humans and wildlife alike.

There are several types of organic fertilizers:

* Manure is produced when livestock eat nitrogen-rich foods (a plant nutrient). It is made up of bacteria and enzymes, which break down the waste into simpler compounds that can be absorbed easily by plants.

* Compost: A mixture of animal manure, grass clippings (decomposing leaves), vegetable scraps (vegetable scraps) and grass clippings (grass clippings). It is high in nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium as well as calcium, magnesium, sulfur. It is highly porous, so it holds moisture well and releases nutrients slowly.

* Fish Emulsion: A liquid product derived primarily from fish oil. It dissolves fats and oils in a similar way to soap. It contains phosphorous, nitrogen, and trace elements.

* Seaweed Extract is a concentrated solution that contains minerals extracted from red algae, brown algae and green algae. It contains vitamins A and C, iron, and Iodine.

* Guano is excrement from amphibians, seabirds, bats and reptiles. It contains nitrogen, sulfur, chloride and carbon.

* Blood Meal - The remains of animals slaughtered. It's rich in protein and can be used to feed poultry and other animals. It also contains trace mineral, phosphorus as well as potassium, nitrogen, and phosphorus.

Mix equal amounts of compost, manure, and/or fish oil to make organic fertilizer. Mix thoroughly. If you don’t have access, you can mix one ingredient with the other. If you have only access to the fish oil emulsion, then you can combine 1 part fish emulsion and 2 parts compost.

Use a shovel to evenly distribute the fertilizer over the soil. You should spread about one quarter cup of the fertilizer per square foot. You will need to add more fertilizer every two weeks until you see signs of new growth.
