How To

Organic fertilizers to be used in the garden

Organic fertilizers include manure (compost), fish emulsions, seaweed extracts, blood meal, and compost. Non-synthetic materials are used in the production of organic fertilizers. Synthetic fertilizers contain chemicals used in industrial processes. Because they are quick and efficient, synthetic fertilizers are popular in agriculture. They don't require laborious preparation. However, synthetic fertilizers pose a risk to the environment and our health. They also require large amounts energy and water to make. Synthetic fertilizers also pollute surface and groundwater through runoff. This pollution is both harmful to wildlife as well as humans.

There are several kinds of organic fertilisers:

* Manure is produced when livestock eat nitrogen-rich foods (a plant nutrient). It contains bacteria and enzymes that break down the waste into simple compounds that plants can absorb easily.

* Compost: A mixture of animal manure, grass clippings (decomposing leaves), vegetable scraps (vegetable scraps) and grass clippings (grass clippings). It is rich for nitrogen, carbon, potassium and magnesium. It's porous so it is able to retain moisture well, and slowly releases nutrients.

* Fish Emulsion is a liquid product made from fish oil. It has the ability to dissolve oils, fats and is very similar to soap. It also contains trace elements like phosphorous, Nitrogen, and other elements.

* Seaweed Extract – A concentrated solution containing minerals extracted from kelp. It's a great source of vitamins A and C as well as iodine and iron.

* Guano, excrement taken from amphibians, bats, reptiles and seabirds. It contains nitrogen, sulfur, chloride and carbon.

* Blood Meal, the remains from slaughtered animals. It's rich in protein and can be used to feed poultry and other animals. It also contains phosphorus, potassium, nitrogen, and trace minerals.

For organic fertilizer mix equal amounts of manure, compost and/or fishemulsion. Mix well. You can substitute one with another if you don't have access to all three ingredients. You can mix one part of the fish emulsion with two portions of compost if you don't have enough.

Spread the fertilizer evenly on the soil with a shovel, or tiller. About a quarter of a cup of the fertilizer is needed per square foot. You'll need to add fertilizer every two weeks until new growth appears.
