FAQ

What time should I plant herbs in my garden?

Spring should be when the soil temperature reaches 55 degrees F. To get the best results, they should be planted in full sun. To grow basil indoors you need to place the seedlings inside pots that have been filled with potting soil. Once they start sprouting leaves, keep them out from direct sunlight. Once the plants begin to grow properly, you should move them into bright indirect lights. After three weeks, you can transplant them to individual pots and water them every day.

Does my backyard have enough room for a vegetable garden?

If you don’t yet have a vegetable gardening, you might wonder if it will be possible. The answer is yes. A vegetable garden doesn't take up much space at all. It just takes some planning. For example, you could build raised beds only 6 inches high. You could also use containers to replace raised beds. You will still have plenty of produce, regardless of which method you choose.

What vegetables do you recommend growing together?

Because they are both fond of similar soil conditions and temperatures, it is easy to grow peppers and tomatoes together. They are a good match since peppers need colder temperatures to produce their best flavor. Start seeds indoors approximately six weeks prior to planting. Once the weather gets warmer, transplant your pepper and tomato plants outdoors.

What is a plant calendar?

A planting calendar lists the plants that should all be planted at various times during the year. The goal of the planting calendar is to increase plant growth while minimizing stress. So, for example, spring crops such as lettuce, spinach, or peas should not be sown before the last frost date. Cucumbers, squash, and spring beans are later crops. Fall crops include carrots and cabbage, broccoli, cauliflowers, kale, potatoes, and others.

What seeds should be started indoors?

Tomato seeds are the best choice for starting indoors. Tomatoes produce year-round fruit and are easy to plant. If you are growing tomatoes in pots, take care when you transplant them to the ground. The soil could dry out if you plant too early. This could lead to root rot. Also, be aware of diseases such as bacterial wilt, which can kill plants quickly.

How often do I need to water my indoor plants?

Indoor plants need watering once every two days. Watering helps maintain humidity levels inside the house. Humidity is essential for healthy plants.

How To

Use organic fertilizers in your garden

Organic fertilizers are made with natural substances like compost, manure, seaweed extract and blood meal. The term organic refers to the use of non-synthetic materials for their production. Synthetic fertilizers contain chemicals used in industrial processes. Because they are quick and efficient, synthetic fertilizers are popular in agriculture. They don't require laborious preparation. However, synthetic fertilizers present risks to both the environment- and human health. In addition, they require large amounts of energy and water to produce. Moreover, many synthetic fertilizers pollute groundwater and surface waters due to runoff. This pollution is detrimental to humans and wildlife alike.

There are many kinds of organic fertilizers.

* Manure is a product of livestock eating nitrogen-rich food (a plant nutrient). It is made up of bacteria and enzymes, which break down the waste into simpler compounds that can be absorbed easily by plants.

* Compost is a mixture from vegetable scraps, grass clippings and decaying leaves. It is rich in nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, calcium, magnesium, sulfur, iron, zinc, copper, manganese, boron, molybdenum, chlorine, and carbon. It is porous so it retains moisture well and releases nutrients slowly.

* Fish Emulsion is a liquid product made from fish oil. It works similarly to soap in that it dissolves oils and fats. It contains phosphorous, nitrogen, and trace elements.

* Seaweed Extract is a concentrated solution that contains minerals extracted from red algae, brown algae and green algae. It is rich in vitamins A, C and iodine as well as iron.

* Guano is the excrement of seabirds and bats. It contains nitrogen, phosphorous, potassium, sodium, magnesium, sulfate, chloride, and carbon.

* Blood Meal: The remains of animal carcasses. It's rich in protein and can be used to feed poultry and other animals. It also contains trace minerals, phosphorus and potassium.

Combine equal parts of compost, manure and/or fish-emulsion to make organic fertilizer. Mix thoroughly. If you don't have all three ingredients, you can substitute them one for another. You can mix one part of the fish emulsion with two portions of compost if you don't have enough.

Spread the fertilizer evenly on the soil with a shovel, or tiller. You should spread about one quarter cup of the fertilizer per square foot. You will need to add more fertilizer every two weeks until you see signs of new growth.
