FAQ

How do I prepare the soil for a garden?

Preparing soil to grow vegetables is very simple. You must first remove all weeds from the area you wish to plant vegetables. Add organic matter such as leaves, composted manure or grass clippings, straw, wood chips, and then water. Let the plants grow by watering well.

What vegetables can you grow together?

Growing tomatoes and peppers together is excellent because they both like similar temperatures and soil conditions. They complement each other well since tomatoes need heat to ripen while peppers require cooler temperatures for optimal flavor. If you want to try growing them together, start seeds indoors about six weeks before planting them. When the weather is warm, transplant the pepper and tomato plants outside.

Do I have enough space to plant a vegetable or fruit garden in my backyard?

If you don't already have a vegetable garden, you might wonder whether you'll have enough room for one. The answer is yes. A vegetable garden doesn't take up much space at all. It takes just a little planning. For instance, raised beds could be constructed only 6 inches high. You can also use containers as raised beds. You will still have plenty of produce, regardless of which method you choose.

What seeds should be started indoors?

A tomato seed makes the best seed for indoor planting. Tomatoes produce year-round fruit and are easy to plant. Plant tomatoes in pots and be careful about putting them in the ground. Planting too soon can cause soil to dry out and root rot. Be aware of diseases like bacterial wilt which can quickly kill plants.

What is a plant calendar?

A planting plan is a list of plants to be planted at different times each year. The goal is to maximise growth while minimizing stress. Early spring crops like spinach, lettuce, and peas must be sow after the last frost date. Spring crops later include squash, cucumbers, summer beans, and squash. Fall crops include cabbage, potatoes, cauliflower, broccoli and cauliflower.

How To

Organic fertilizers for garden use

Organic fertilizers include manure (compost), fish emulsions, seaweed extracts, blood meal, and compost. The term "organic" refers to using non-synthetic materials in their production. Synthetic fertilizers are chemicals that are used in industrial processes. These fertilizers are commonly used in agriculture, as they can provide nutrients to plants quickly without the need for complicated preparation. However, synthetic fertilizers present risks to both the environment- and human health. Synthetic fertilizers require large amounts of energy as well as water to be produced. Runoff from synthetic fertilizers can also pollute groundwater and surface water. This pollution can be harmful for both wildlife and humans.

There are many types of organic fertilizers.

* Manure - is made when livestock eat nitrogen (a plant food nutrient). It contains bacteria and enzymes that break down the waste into simple compounds that plants can absorb easily.

* Compost: A mixture of animal manure, grass clippings (decomposing leaves), vegetable scraps (vegetable scraps) and grass clippings (grass clippings). It is rich in nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, calcium, magnesium, sulfur, iron, zinc, copper, manganese, boron, molybdenum, chlorine, and carbon. It is highly porous, so it holds moisture well and releases nutrients slowly.

* Fish Emulsion – A liquid product derived from fish oils. It dissolves fats and oils in a similar way to soap. It contains trace elements and phosphorous as well as nitrogen and nitrogen.

* Seaweed extract - A concentrated solution of minerals from kelp and red algae. It provides a source of vitamins A and C, iodine, and iron.

* Guano, excrement taken from amphibians, bats, reptiles and seabirds. It contains carbon, nitrogen, phosphorous as well as potassium, sodium and magnesium.

* Blood Meal: The remains of animal carcasses. It is rich with protein, making it useful for feeding poultry or other animals. It also contains phosphorus, potassium, nitrogen, and trace minerals.

For organic fertilizer mix equal amounts of manure, compost and/or fishemulsion. Mix well. If you don’t have access, you can mix one ingredient with the other. If you only have the fish-emulsion you can substitute one with another.

To apply the fertilizer, spread it evenly over the soil using a shovel or tiller. About a quarter of a cup of the fertilizer is needed per square foot. You will need to add more fertilizer every two weeks until you see signs of new growth.
