FAQ

How do I determine the type of soil that I have?

The color of the soil can tell you how much organic matter it contains. Organic matter is more abundant in dark soils than those with lighter colors. Another option is to test the soil. These tests can measure the soil's nutrients.

How big is a vegetable gardening space?

One square foot of soil will require 1/2 pound of seeds. This is a good rule of thumb. You will need 100 pounds of seed if your area is 10 feet by 10 foot (3 meters by 3 metres).

Can I grow fruit trees in pots?

Yes! If space is limited, you can grow fruit trees in pots. To prevent tree rot, make sure the pot has drainage holes. Make sure the pot is deep enough for the root ball to be held. This will keep the tree from becoming stressed.

Which vegetables are best to grow together?

Because they are both fond of similar soil conditions and temperatures, it is easy to grow peppers and tomatoes together. They are a good match since peppers need colder temperatures to produce their best flavor. You can try planting them together by starting seeds indoors six weeks before transplanting them outdoors. Once the weather warms up, transplant the tomato and pepper plants outdoors.

What is the purpose of a planting calendar?

A planting plan is a list of plants to be planted at different times each year. The goal is to maximise growth while minimizing stress. So, for example, spring crops such as lettuce, spinach, or peas should not be sown before the last frost date. Later spring crops include cucumbers, squash, and summer beans. Fall crops include potatoes, carrots, broccoli, cauliflower and broccoli.

Which layout is best for vegetable gardens?

The location of your home will dictate the layout of your vegetable garden. For easy harvesting, you can plant vegetables together if the area is large. However, if you live in a rural area, you should space out your plants for maximum yield.

What's the best way to keep my indoor plant alive?

Indoor plants can survive for several years. However, it's important to repot your plant every few months to help promote new growth. Repotting is simple. Remove the old soil and place fresh compost.

How To

Organic fertilizers for garden use

Organic fertilizers can be made from natural substances, such as compost, manure and seaweed extract. The term "organic" refers to using non-synthetic materials in their production. Synthetic fertilizers are chemical compounds used in industrial processes. They are widely used in agriculture because they provide nutrients to plants quickly and efficiently without requiring laborious preparation methods. Synthetic fertilizers can pose risks to the environment and human health. They also require large amounts energy and water to make. Runoff from synthetic fertilizers can also pollute groundwater and surface water. This pollution is detrimental to humans and wildlife alike.

There are many types of organic fertilizers.

* Manure is created when livestock eat foods containing nitrogen (a nutrient for plants). It contains bacteria, enzymes, and other substances that break down the waste into simple compounds which can be easily absorbed by plants.

* Compost is a mixture from vegetable scraps, grass clippings and decaying leaves. It is rich in nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, calcium, magnesium, sulfur, iron, zinc, copper, manganese, boron, molybdenum, chlorine, and carbon. It is highly porous, so it holds moisture well and releases nutrients slowly.

* Fish Emulsion- A liquid product that is made from fish oil. It dissolves fats and oils in a similar way to soap. It also contains trace elements like phosphorous, Nitrogen, and other elements.

* Seaweed Extract – A concentrated solution containing minerals extracted from kelp. It provides a source of vitamins A and C, iodine, and iron.

* Guano is the excrement of seabirds and bats. It contains carbon, nitrogen, phosphorous as well as potassium, sodium and magnesium.

* Blood Meal - The remains of animals slaughtered. It is rich in protein which is useful for feeding birds and other animals. It also contains trace minerals like phosphorus, potassium and nitrogen.

Make organic fertilizer by combining equal parts manure, fish emulsion, and compost. Mix thoroughly. If you don’t possess all three ingredients you can substitute one for the other. For example, if you only have access to the fish emulsion, you can mix 1 part of fish emulsion with two parts of compost.

Apply the fertilizer to the soil by using a shovel and tiller. Spread about a quarter cup of the mixture per square foot of growing space. To see signs of new growth, you'll need more fertilizer each two weeks.
