How To

Organic fertilizers are available for garden use

Organic fertilizers are made of natural substances like manure, compost and fish emulsion. Non-synthetic materials are used in the production of organic fertilizers. Synthetic fertilizers can be used in industrial processes. They are often used in agriculture since they provide nutrients to plants efficiently and quickly, without the need of complicated preparation. Synthetic fertilizers can pose risks to the environment and human health. To produce, synthetic fertilizers require a lot of energy and water. Synthetic fertilizers also pollute surface and groundwater through runoff. This pollution can be harmful for both wildlife and humans.

There are many kinds of organic fertilizers.

* Manure is created when livestock eat foods containing nitrogen (a nutrient for plants). It has bacteria and enzymes that help to break down the waste, resulting in simple compounds that are easy for plants to absorb.

* Compost: A mixture of animal manure, grass clippings (decomposing leaves), vegetable scraps (vegetable scraps) and grass clippings (grass clippings). It is rich in carbon, nitrogen, phosphorous, potassium, magnesium and sulfur. It is extremely porous and holds water well.

* Fish Emulsion- A liquid product that is made from fish oil. It has the ability to dissolve oils, fats and is very similar to soap. It contains trace elements and phosphorous as well as nitrogen and nitrogen.

* Seaweed Extract – A concentrated solution containing minerals extracted from kelp. It is rich in vitamins A, C and iodine as well as iron.

* Guano - Excreta from amphibians and seabirds. It contains nitrogen, sulfur, chloride and carbon.

* Blood Meal is the meat and bones of animals that have been slaughtered. It's rich in protein and can be used to feed poultry and other animals. It also contains trace minerals like phosphorus, potassium and nitrogen.

For organic fertilizer mix equal amounts of manure, compost and/or fishemulsion. Mix well. If you don’t possess all three ingredients you can substitute one for the other. If you have only access to the fish oil emulsion, then you can combine 1 part fish emulsion and 2 parts compost.

Use a shovel to evenly distribute the fertilizer over the soil. The fertilizer should be about 1/4 cup per square foot. You'll need to add fertilizer every two weeks until new growth appears.
